The Landlady By Roald Dahl – continuing the story

Her phrasing was weird, but I passed it off as nothing to worry about. I decided to head to bed as it was getting late and I needed to get up early the next morning so I said good night and headed up. I thought of heading to the 3rd floor out of curiosity, but that seemed rude so I decided not to think of it, the bed was comfy and soft and I fell asleep instantly. The next day I woke up early and got ready, it was half past six and it seemed she was not up yet so I decided to grab some toast and leave her a note, it seemed rude no to. After a busy day of work I got some lunch and went back to the bed and breakfast, briskly. I decided that I was already staying there. I needn’t to knock. When I opened the door to enter she was standing there waiting for most likely more people to stay there, it came as a bit of a shock to me that she had been standing there the entire time, but I didn’t show the shock on my face as that would be rude, she let me enter and asked me how my day was, I said it was great as I had gained a promotion for my amazing work that day, she looked quite frightened as though I would never return so I decided to tell her that I needed to get up early everyday to go to my job, she seemed to calm down a bit after that.

Dinner was already made when I arrived, it smelled good and sweet, she asked me if I wanted spuds and beef for supper, I couldn’t decline. I ate my dinner and she got me a hot chocolate as I sat down by the fire thinking to myself “had that lady been waiting by that door the entire day and what about the two people on the third floor, why haven’t they come down to the first or second floor”. She had arrived with the hot chocolate placed it on the table in front of me and sat down beside me, we sat there drinking the hot chocolate for what seemed like an hour in silence, after finishing the hot chocolate I felt drowsy, so I said good night, brushed my teeth and went off to bed. I sank into those warm cosy sheets and slept Ed right away ready for another morning of work…

…I seemed to have woken on the third floor next to the two people which I found had been taxidermied perfectly preserved I floated up and saw my body there with them, perfectly preserved I looked at my hands and saw that they were transparent it seemed I might have died, I drifted down to the first floor and saw another young fellow speaking to the lady then walking to the book, I tried to warn him but he couldn’t hear me…

…two days later I tried to leave the house, I couldn’t. It seems I was trapped for now, I hope I can leave soon. It’s been 3 years, no one else has entered that door other than that young gentleman after I was killed. She stands by that door just inside it waiting everyday from morning to dusk, I’m glad no one else has entered the house so far, I hope I can leave soon.
